The year 2022 in review: Facts and figures of the Kentaa platform | infographic

28-02-2023 | 15:58

Every year, we reflect on the Kentaa platform's facts, figures and use. Organisations raise millions of euros annually through crowdfunding, peer-to-peer fundraising, and event fundraising. What has 2022 brought to our customers? We share the platform's key figures in the following infographic. Look for explanations and conclusions under the infographic.

Yield via the Kentaa platform increased by 52% yet again

Many events went ahead again in 2022. Due to events being pushed forward to 2022 because of Corona, the 'competition' was high; therefore, recruiting participants was challenging for some organisations. Nevertheless, we see growth in online fundraising partly due to the return of these events. Similarly to 2021, the revenue of the Kentaa platform increased by 52%. When events have a more even spread and the event calendar becomes more balanced again, there is even more potential for growth.

'At home' editions are here to stay
It is nice to see some positive corona developments, such as 'at home' editions of events, have remained. These events allowed organisations to tap into other target groups; since location is no longer an obstacle. For example, we saw excellent fundraising success at the Refugee Walk Flanders, which utilised the Kentaa platform for the first time in 2022.

To make events even easier for our customers in 2022, we expanded our e-ticketing functionality with the possibility of scanning tickets on location, which allowed organisations to keep track of participants and help them get off on a good start.

Average donation amount on the rise

Where there was still a dip in the average donation amount in 2021, we saw it increase in 2022 to € 33.28 (a 10% increase)—a pleasant development. In addition, we also see that the share of companies has grown (we saw a decrease in 2021). Companies donated more often, and their average donation amount increased by 13% to € 199.52!

There has, therefore - with the return of higher and more company donations - been a shift in the distribution of donations: fewer donations of less than € 20 and more donations in the higher categories.

Most donations are made on a  mobile device, but don't count out desktop users!

In 2022, 83% of donations came via mobile, 15% via desktop and 2% are made with a tablet. From this, you could conclude that mobile phones are the most important device, and the desktop is on its way out. However, desktop still has a considerable share of the total revenue. 67% of the proceeds come from mobile donations, but 31.5% of the profits come from donations via desktop. In other words, the mobile experience is important, but don't forget desktop users.

Peer-to-peer yields continue to rise

The yield of personal fundraisers has been rising for five years in a row. In 2022 we saw an increase of 40% in total fundraisers compared to 2021! In total, users started more than 60,000 fundraisers via the Kentaa platform. These are participants of fundraising events with their sponsor pages and individuals who raise money for charity through their fundraisers, back after an absence during the corona crisis—impressive, heartwarming numbers. We also saw big numbers in emergency aid. For example, the Netherlands took massive action for Ukraine

On average, an active fundraiser (active = at least one donation) raised € 376 in 2022, an increase of 9% compared to 2021. Of all the fundraisers created, 69% became active, just like the year before.

The percentage of fundraisers who donated to their own page decreased by 7%, but their average donation amount increased by 10% (€28.44).

Returning fundraisers (participants - measured when participating in events), usually raise less than 'first-timers'. Raising funds and calling on friends, family and colleagues more than once is difficult. Nevertheless, there is good news: returning participants raised 26% more in 2022 than in 2021, bringing their average yield to € 244.22.

Teams also increased their average revenue from € 1,447.47 to € 1. 669.70 (+15%). Moreover, teams had an average of 5 team members in 2022, one more than in 2021. 84% of all teams raised at least one donation.

A hopeful start to 2023

The results of 2023 are still challenging to predict, but in these first two months, we see positive first results. For example, recruiting participants for fundraising events seems to be a smaller challenge than in 2022. Fortunately, the Netherlands still appears to be very generous regarding emergency aid. We hope this positive start continues for the rest of the year!
